Misneach agus Foinse

Is cosúil gur ar an gCéadaoin a bheidh cruinniú chinniúnach Foinse le Fo-choiste Nuachtáin agus Irisí Fhoras na Gaeilge. Ag an gcruinniú seo cuirfear an tairiscint is déanaí i láthair Mhoinéar Teorannta agus, ag an am sin, beidh an chinneadh ag Pádraig Ó Céidigh cé acu an é eagrán na deireadh seachtaine seo eagrán dheireannach an nuachtáin nó nach ea.

Nílim in éad leis faoin gcinneadh seo nó is cinnte nach mbeidh margadh iomlán sasúil ann do. Braithfidh sé ar a chumas – agus a thoil – cibé pian atá sa tairiscint a fhulaingt. Taca an ama seo, agus cúrsaí eacnamaíochta go dona, ní féidir ach go bhfuil brú eacnamúil ar Ó Céidigh agus an aerlíne Aer Arainn.

Má tá sé fíor, mar a deir sé, go bhfuil sé ag cailliúint €5,000 in aghaidh na seachtaine le Foinse, agus nach doichí go mbeidh athrú ar seo go dtí go mbeidh rialacha nua faoi fhograíocht dhá theangach ag rannóga stáit i bhfeidhm – agus ní fios cén uair idir seo agus Lá Pilib a Chleite a bheidh seo déanta – ní féidir bheith ró dhóchasach ag an bpointe seo.

An miotas dainséarach agus seo ar siúl go mbeadh leithéidí Ó Céidigh sásta a thuilleadh airgid fós a chailliúnt sa chás go ndiultódh sé do thairiscint an Fhorais agus go n-iarrfaidís ar Mhoinéar leanúint ag foilsiú Foinse fhaid is a bhí comharba á aimsiú.

Caol seans. Ní amadán é Ó Céidigh.

Ar an láimh eile, tá sé le cruthú nach amadáin iad Foras na Gaeilge nó an Aire Uí Chuív. Nó má theipeann ar Foinse, sílim gurb é sin an tairne dheireannach i gcónra a gcreidiúint.

Ní h-é nach mbeadh saol ann i ndiaidh Foinse. Bheadh – tá sé cruthaithe ag Nuacht 24 gur féidir leo nuachtán a fhoilsiú gach seachtain – ach caol seans go mbeadh siad sásta seo a dhéanamh de réir téarmaí an Fhorais. Cén fath go ndéanfaidís amhlaidh? Tá airgead substaintiúil i gceist le foilsiú nuachtáin – idir cló, dáíleadh is eile – gan trácht ar iriseoirí a íoc!

Táim in amhras go mbeidh dea thoradh ar seo ar fad. Tá súil agam go bhfuilim micheart. Mar eolas: seo coip de litir a sheol mé inniu chuig an Irish Times féachaint an eireodh leis, dá bhfoilseofaí é, náire de short ar bith a chur ar Fhoras na Gaeilge a thabharfadh orthu an rud ceart a dhéanamh agus seasamh le Foinse.

Nílim dóchasach.

A eagarthóir,

I used to be the editor of Lá Nua, the Irish language daily newspaper which had to close due to lack of funding last year. As such I have understanding and sympathy with the editor and staff of Foinse, the remaining Irish language newspaper, as it faces possible closure this weekend, again due to lack of adequate support from its funder, Foras na Gaeilge, the cross border body established under the Good Friday Agreement to promote Irish on an all Ireland basis.
It seems perverse that newspapers in Irish which are read around Ireland and the world are emperilled due to the failure of the State to invest adequately in their maintenance – and the principle of state maintenance of minority language newspapers is established in countries throughout Europe where there is recognition of their role in contributing to interculturalism and diversity. It’s doubly perverse to consider that two Irish language newspapers which pre-existed the Good Friday Agreement in which it was promised to take resolute action to promote Irish on an all island basis are left to die out for want of support from the states north and south of the border.
After all, there seems to be no shortage of funds to establish government units for the translation of documents, which are read by far less than the readership of Foinse or Lá Nua, from English to Irish. The funding crisis for Foinse follows the recent announcement of the establishment of a unit within the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs for the translation of some 50,000 pages of statutory instrtuments to Irish at a cost conservatively estimated between €3m and €5m.
Surely it defeats all logic in a time of economic adversity to fund such an unproductive project when a newspaper such as Foinse is crying out for investment?
I refuse to use the term ‘grant aid’ because I know only too well that is an unfair description of the recompsense needed for the sheer work it takes to produce a newspaper weekly or, as I experienced, daily.
This weekend’s (June 27/28) edition of Foinse could be the last time the State’s remaining Irish language newspaper is published and if this comes to pass, it will be a poor reflection indeed on a Government which in December 2006 proclaimed the aim of achieving a bilingual state by 2028. To date it has yet to publish a plan to do so but it will be a far more difficult objective to achieve without a functioning and thriving Irish language media, of which Foinse was and is and should remain a vital part.
Time is short before the presses roll on Foinse’s last edition and there’s no need for a rehash here of machinations of Foinse with the extremely bureauratic Foras na Gaeilge, the virtually unaccountable funder which has, inexplicably, failed to publish its accounts for the years 2005-8.
Minister Ó Cuiv has at his disposal a €6m discretionary fund, Ciste na Gaeilge, and should he be minded to save Foinse, he could do worse than invest in the survival of the newspaper.
If he does not swiftly and decisively come to the aid of Foinse, we may have to surmise that his commitment and that his colleagues in government is half hearted, self serving and to the detriment of the Irish language.

Sílim gur cheart do dhaoine a thuiscint nach tubaist é seo do Foinse amháin, agus don fhoireann atá ag obair go dícheallach is sinn ag caint, ach gur tubaist don Ghaeilge é. Aon duine nach n-aithníonn sin, níl croí acu.

Ba cheart, chomh maith, teachtaireachtaí misnigh a sheoladh chuig foireann an nuachtáin an tseachtain seo. Tá sé thar a bheith deacair leanúint ag obair ar bharr do léime nuair atá tua ag crochadh os do chionn mar atá. Ní féidir leat bheith cinnte, nuair a bhuailtear an tua, go ndeinfear tú a dhícheannú in aon bhuille amháin nó an mbeidh sé go mall pianmhar thar tréimhse ama, mar a tharla do Lá Nua.

Sin na smaointí a ritheann liom an tseachtain seo.

Seolaimis misneach chuig foireann Foinse. Go n-éirí leo….

Agus mura bhfuil an achainí sínithe agat go dtí seo, céard atá tú ag fánúint leis?

Maith tú a Choncuibhir as an fód a sheasamh ar son Foinse.
Cuirfeadh an ghnó seo go léir lagmhisneach ort.
