Rogha an aineolais

Tá diospóireacht ar bun i leathnach na litreacha san Irish Times le cúpla seachtain anuas faoi seirbhisí i nGaeilge a bheith ar fáíl don phobal.

Seo mar atá tite amach go dtí seo, sara nochtfaidh mé mo thuairim féin faoi. D’fhoilsíodh litir ó Aonghus, seanchara iGaeilge, mar fhreagra ar an litir seo ó Dhónal Flynn,  Ba fhreagra é sin ar litir fórsúil ó Mharc Coleman, eagarthóir eacnamaíochta Newstalk agus údar an leabhair, The Best Is Yet To Come, ar an abhar. Freagra a bhí ansan ar litir ón bhfear uasal  O Floinn.

Inniu, tá litir eile ón bhfear seo san Irish Times.  Tugann sé léargas ar an ndearcadh diultach atá i measc sciar áirithe den phobal faoin dteanga.  Agus tugann sé léargas freisin ar an mbrí cheart leis an bhfeachtas ar son stadas na Gaeilge mar abhar riachtanach ag an Ard Teist a laghdú.

Ní ar son na teanga ar cheart an stadas sin a bheith ag an nGaeilge – agus tá diospóireacht eile ann faoin mbealach a mhúintear an teanga – ach ar son an oideachais féin.  Má bhionn an rogha ag daoine óga ar na h-abhair ar mhaith leo staidéar a dhéanamh orthu ag libhéal na hArd Teiste, an dtarlódh sé go mbeidh daoine ann a n-eireodh as abhair ar nós Béarla agus Matamaitic, abhair riachtanacha eile?  B’fheidir gur cheart go mbeadh gach ábhar roghnach ag libhéal na hArd Teiste?  An mbeadh an tUasal Flynn ar a shon sin?  Ní doigh liom é.

Tá lochtanna ar an mbealach a múintear an teanga ag libhéal na hArd Teiste agus sna meanscoileanna – ach ní h-ionann sin agus a rá nár cheart é a mhúineadh agus nár cheart cheart nach mbeadh ar daltaí í a fhoghlaim.  Is eochair í an teanga le tuiscint níos fearr a fháíl ar thír agus ar phobal na hÉireann.  Ar ndóigh, tuiscint sea rud nach dtagann le dearcadh cúng leitheidí Donal Flynn. Níl uatha san ach córas oiliúna d’fhostaíocht seachas córas oideachais don saol mór….

Tá mo ladar curtha sa scéal arís agam, ach níl fhios agam an bhfoilseofar é.

Dála an scéil, tá roinnt http sa bhreis agat sna nascanna thuas a fhágann briste iad. Tá na litreacha ar fáil ar Ghaelport freisin (agus ní gá síntiúis!)

    Athfhreagra Flynn

Seo an méid a sheol mé chuig an Times inniu:
    Madam,

I see that Donal Flynn (Letters, 23 May) is resorting to the argument of “compulsory Irish” being “forced down people’s throats”, although he phrases it less drastically.

The Department of Education sets the curriculum; this includes minimum requirements on study, including a requirement to study Irish, English, Maths and a modern language. The Universities and Third Level
Colleges set minimum standards for entry. In the case of the NUI, this includes a modest minimum requirement for Irish, in the case of those who have had an opportunity to study it.

However, unlike the case for the other subjects, both the Department and the NUI allow a derogation from Irish in the case of students who can show a genuine inability to learn Irish.

I fail to see how supporting the small minority, who are unwilling to learn part of the standard curriculum, will put me on the higher moral ground. Or why the majority, who show no difficulty in attaining the minimum standards required, should be denied the opportunity to learn Irish. Making languages optional in the UK has had the effect of
pushing them to the margins of the curriculum there. Why should we repeat that error, in the case of Irish or any other language?

Foilsithe inniu, ach gan na comharthaí athfriotail thart ar “forced down peoples throats”.

Litir fiúntach ann freisin ó Tadhg Ó hIfearnáin, ag rá nach iad gaeilgeoirí laethiúla a roinne an socrú maidir leis an gcuracalam ná an NUI. Is fíor sin.
